Today, September 24, 2026, the world marks World Maritime Day. This year’s theme by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence” — and for the first time, it will run for two years (2026-2027) to focus on implementation.
It’s a powerful shift. It asks a simple question: regulations only matter when they work at sea. For Nigeria this theme is not abstract. It is urgent.
What Does “From Policy to Practice” Mean?
According to the IMO, this theme emphasizes translating international conventions into robust national legislation, operational compliance, and effective enforcement.
It covers practical areas like maritime safety, tackling fraudulent ship registration, cyber security, and cleaner shipping.
In his message, IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez noted that regulations deliver safer, more resilient, and cleaner shipping only when implemented worldwide.
Why World Maritime Day for Nigeria’s Blue Economy
Nigeria’s Blue Economy is projected to be a major growth engine, but policy without practice is leaving our ocean vulnerable:
- Oil Pollution & Waste: Decades of spills in the Niger Delta have degraded our greatest blue carbon sink.
- Mangrove Loss: Nigeria loses mangroves to deforestation and coastal development, despite them storing 10x more carbon than land forests.
- IUU Fishing & Abandoned Vessels: Weak enforcement undermines livelihoods.
This is where NIMEPA comes in.
How NIMEPA is Powering Maritime Excellence in Practice
At The Nigerian Marine Environment Protection Association (NIMEPA), we don’t just advocate for policy — we implement it.
We are turning our Blue Carbon Restoration Strategy into community action, through our ongoing mangrove planting projects. Read how The Connection Between Blue Carbon and Nigeria’s Blue Economy is vital for climate resilience.
Our ocean needs more than concern. It needs partners. If your business operates near Nigeria’s coast, compliance is partnership.
What Should Businesses Operating Near Nigeria’s Coast Prioritize?
If you operate a vessel, port, or offshore facility, here is your “Policy to Practice” checklist:
- Reduce Emissions & Waste: Implement MARPOL-compliant waste reception and low-carbon operations.
- Protect Ecosystems: Support no-deforestation zones around mangroves and sea turtle nesting sites.
- Support Restoration: Fund community-based mangrove restoration as a verifiable carbon offset.
- Invest in People: Train seafarers and coastal communities on safety and environmental compliance.
