Two Days. One Urgent Message.
This week, the world observes two milestones that belong together: World Environment Day on 5 June, and World Oceans Day on 8 June. NIMEPA marks both with one conviction, the health of our environment and the health of our ocean are not separate concerns. They are the same crisis, calling for the same response.
The Earth Is Signalling. Are We Listening?
World Environment Day 2026 confronts us with the planet’s urgent signals rising temperatures, intensifying storms, eroding coastlines, ecosystems under strain. World Oceans Day deepens that call with a focused theme: Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet one of the most powerful tools we have for climate resilience, biodiversity, and the survival of coastal communities.
For Nigeria, these themes are not abstract. They are the reality of our coastline, our creeks, our fishing communities, and the blue economy assets that belong to every Nigerian.
The Connection We Cannot Ignore
Every river carries what we discard on land directly into the sea. Deforestation silts our waterways. Agricultural runoff creates dead zones where nothing survives. And ships , the engines of global trade traverse our waters daily, carrying pollution risks that respect no border.
MARPOL exists because the international community recognised this truth decades ago: marine pollution is everyone’s business. Compliance is not a burden on operators, it is the floor of responsible stewardship. Nigeria’s waters are a national asset. What flows into them either builds or degrades that asset. There is no neutral position.
NIMEPA’s Commitment
NIMEPA was established to bridge the gap between global environmental commitments and Nigerian reality. Protecting our marine environment is not the preserve of regulators alone, it belongs to every Nigerian who benefits from our blue economy. The Trustees of NIMEPA affirm our commitment to:
- Awareness: bringing marine environmental responsibility to communities, businesses, schools, and public discourse.
- Education and Early Engagement: reaching young Nigerians while their values are still forming. A child who understands why the ocean matters grows into an adult who acts differently. Nigeria’s next generation of ship owners, regulators, and policymakers is in a classroom today. NIMEPA intends to find them early.
- Collaboration: aligning Nigeria’s practices with international standards alongside regulators, industry, and civil society.
- Action: through our Quarterly Marine and Beach Clean-Up Programme and direct community engagement.

The vessels you operate, the fuels you use, the waste practices you adopt, each decision ripples outward. NIMEPA is building a community of stakeholders who understand that environmental responsibility and commercial excellence are not in tension; they are increasingly inseparable. A Call to Every Stakeholder
- To governments: enforce the standards that exist. Strengthen marine protected areas. Integrate environmental compliance into port governance and maritime licensing.

- To individuals: choose reusable over disposable. Support sustainable seafood. Recognise that choices made at kitchen tables and in boardrooms both find their way, eventually, to the sea.
The Tide of Change
There is a temptation, on days like these, to issue pledges and move on. NIMEPA resists that. We are a young organisation with a long purpose, and we know that visibility without action serves no one.
Nigeria has extraordinary natural wealth in its waters. Whether it endures for the next generation depends on decisions being made right now by all of us.
